What to Expect When Exporting Freight
Exporting Breakbulk/Heavy Lift Ocean Shipments
- The first step we take is assess the cargo and devisng a plan. This puts the shipment into perspective. Physical dimensions, weight and volume are all used to determine requirements such as permits, crane use and loading plans.
- Then preparing the shipment by professionally packing and loading onto trucks with heavy lift equipment for trucking to the port.
- This is the point where Customs export documentation being in order would be advantageous to avoid delays. A commercial invoice and packing list is a great start. Every country has different documentation and procedure processes and it is important that these are done correctly. A forwarder can streamline this for you and walk you through the process.
- Once your cargo is delivered to the port the stevedores will load your shipment and secure for ocean transport by utilizing different methods such as Lashing with chains or cables and Dunnage (filling negative space) .
Exporting Air Shipments
- Securing a booking is the first step I take. Without that, you’re just spinning your wheels. This can be obtained directly from the carrier but I recommend using a freight forwarder for your benefit.
- The first stop for your shipment going by air is the screening location. All cargo must be screened prior to being delivered to the airport.
- Once it is transferred to the airline we prepare the documents and file your export with customs.
- You will receive a copy of all documents such as the air waybill (AWB) and a certificate of origin if required. You can track your cargo by the AWB number. We will provide you with a link for tracking.
- Every country has different requirements so it is important to hire a forwarder to make sure everything is done correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answered by Diana Stinson
What should I not do when shipping?
The absolute biggest thing you should not do is shop around excessively. Why?
- There is only a handful of carriers.
- Everyone gets the same price.
- Big companies will mark it up more than small ones.
Getting 5 quotes hurts your standing with the carriers making it difficult to negotiate on your behalf. The carrier will tell me they have seen this shipment over and over and not want to deal with anyone as they have no idea who has the shipment.
How much does it cost to import from China?
Import costs depend on freight mode, weight, dimensions, and tariffs. Contact us for a custom quote. I can help you with your HS Codes and reduce your tariffs possibly.
What determines my tariff payments?
Your product’s HS Code (Harmonized System Code) determines tariff rates. We provide HS code research to ensure accuracy.
Can I pick up my goods at the port?
Only port-licensed companies and drivers can pick up goods. We handle customs clearance and delivery to your location.
Who is responsible for insuring my freight?
Carriers are not liable for damage, even when at fault. We strongly recommend cargo insurance and can arrange coverage.
How long after the ship arrives will I receive my goods?
Typically, 2-3 days after vessel arrival, I can coordinate customs clearance and delivery. This can take longer if there is a customs inspection or port congestion.
